July 23, 2017 - Walking Humbly with God – Rev. Baard
Scripture: James 4:1-12
Grounding ourselves, and seeking our way, in the practice of discernment.
July 16, 2017 - Love Thy Neighbor – Rev. Baard
Scripture: James 2:1-13
The Letter of James reminds us that money too often divides communities and people, and in response we should continually ask, “How am I loving my neighbor?”
July 9, 2017 - Mourning, Dancing, and Carrying On – Rev. Parker
Scripture: Matthew 11:16–19, 25–30
Jesus tells a parable of the diversity of the dance we are invited to: whether we are mourning, celebrating, or somewhere in between… also, what does all this have to do with thousands of people at a church meeting and a wheelbarrow?
July 2, 2017 - We the People – Rev. Baard
Scripture: James 3:2-18
On July 4th weekend, as we continue to read the Letter of James, we consider how the national tongue which has sought to proclaim a blessing in “We the People,” has too often carried the curse of excluding people.
June 25, 2017 - Walk the Talk – Rev. Baard
Scripture: James 1: 19-25
The Letter of James invites us to not simply be hearers but do-ers of the Word… but we often need reminding of the deep listening at the heart of walking in faith.
June 18, 2017 - Garments of Grace – Rev. Baard
Scripture: Colossians 3:12-17
Mary (and we all) give thanks for the many ways that Ray Cornils has modeled and wrapped our community in grace in his ministry with us. Happy retirement, great thanks, and much much love, Ray!
June 11, 2017 - Celebrating the UCC 60th – The Rev. Deborah Blood
Scripture: Matthew 28:16-20
Our Maine Conference Minister, The Rev. Deborah Blood, joins us to reflect on Jesus’s “Great Commission,” and how that commission is being carried—60 years after the creation of the United Church of Christ—to the margins, to places where the wind of the spirit blows, and to people with new stories of faith to share with us.
May 28, 2017 - Up: Making Room – Rev. Parker
Scripture: Acts 1:6-14
In a cosmos where “up” isn’t a direction, how do we think of the story of Jesus’s ascension? Could it be less about heaven, and more about the upper room where the disciples find Jesus again in their memory, practices, and prayers? We give thanks for those whose memory walks with us this Memorial Day, those who died in war for peace, and those whom we bless on new journeys this commencement season.
May 7, 2017 - The Thread – Dr. Diana Butler Bass
Scripture: Acts 2:42-47
Diana Butler Bass—writer, speaker, and independent scholar—visits First Parish to help us celebrate our 300th anniversary year. Like the early church of Acts, she invites us to engage in the making of meaning through the spiritual practices of holding on… and letting go.
April 16, 2017 - Seeds of Easter – Rev. Baard
Scripture: John 20:1-18
Jesus welcomes us (back) to life in a garden, and invites us to let that life go: sharing its good news from person to person, generation to generation.
