The Return of the First Parish Tower
On Monday August 18, 2003, the church tower at First Parish church was taken down due to rot found in the wooden support structures. A special congregation meeting was held on September 7, 2003 to review options in dealing with the tower repair. The congregation unanimously voted to repair the tower to its original height using white oak for the wood.

The tower returned during the last two weeks of November. The following are pictures of the return of the tower. (Special thanks to Homer Kenison for taking these photos.)

The reinforced spire frame is lifted high above the church by a crane and lowered into the tower.

A wooden support structure that supports the tower and side panels is lowered into place.

One of the wooden tower side panels is lowered into position.

The construction workers are busy attaching the side panel to the support structure.

A view from inside the tower showing the new white oak being used in the tower construction.

The tower has returned!

As Susan Chadima said in the Pilgrims Progress,

It is with a wonderful sense of accomplishment for the entire First Parish community that we are realizing the tangible results of so many individuals’ efforts and contributions."
