An Open and Affirming Congregation
Walking meditation on the labyrinth embodies our metaphorical life/faith journey and provides a connection with spirit beyond words. Labyrinths are an ancient practice which the church has used for centuries. Our labyrinth is of the Chartres Cathedral design and is open to people of any background, religious or not.
A labyrinth has a single winding pathway leading to the center and back out again. Unlike a maze, there are no tricks or dead ends to engage our logic-seeking mind. Rather, by simply putting one foot in front of the other, focusing on the rhythm of our steps and our breath allows space for new insights.
People walk the labyrinth for many reasons. It is an opportunity… for body prayer or meditation…. to create a little peace and quiet in the midst of a busy life… to nurture more peace in the world… to hold yourself or someone you love in healing light for body, mind or spirit… to center yourself in God…to love.
Our 30’ canvas labyrinth is located in Pilgrim House, the education and office building at 9 Cleaveland Street, diagonally behind the church. A labyrinth tender is always available to answer questions, offer readings, or just to create a welcoming presence.
In 2015, in partnership with the Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust, we helped to create the Labyrinth in the Woods on the grounds bordering the Community Garden. The labyrinth honors the life of long-time Labyrinth and Christian Education leader, Susan Fitzgerald. All are welcome to explore this practice from dawn to dusk. If you would like to have a group presentation with a labyrinth guide, please contact the Labyrinth Coordinator.
To reach the Labyrinth in the Woods, you can set your GPS to 90 Maurice Dr. Brunswick, ME or:
From downtown Brunswick, head south on Maine Street (toward Bowdoin College). Turn right onto McKeen Street. In 0.8mi turn left on Baribeau Drive. In 0.6mi turn right onto Maurice Drive. At the end of Maurice Drive, turn left into Horizons nursing care facility, then immediately right into the small lot marked with a Land Trust sign.
The Community Garden is directly at the end of Maurice Drive.
The trailhead (access to the Labyrinth) is marked by a kiosk in the woods to the right when facing the Garden entrance gate.
