Visiting First Parish Church

Come as you are.

We hope you can join us Sunday morning for worship at 10 AM.

Worship

Worship is at the heart of our life together. As we gather each week, we trust in the presence of the Spirit to bless our time together and to renew ourselves to be a blessing in the week ahead. While our worship form is pretty traditional – hymns, scripture, sermon, silence, and music, – our thinking is not. In dialogue with our heritage, we engage the living of these days, in this time, and in this place. Our worship is intergenerational, with children participating in the opening part of worship before going to Church School. On the first Sunday of the month we celebrate communion. At First Parish, communion is open to all people of any age. The children’s and youth choirs sing once a month. Music enriches our life through congregational singing, vocal choirs, and handbell choirs.

Communion

We celebrate the sacrament of communion as a remembrance of the life and ministry of Jesus and as an embodiment of Christ’s ongoing presence in our world. We celebrate an open table, where people of all ages are welcome to participate at their own spiritual discretion.

Parking

Parking

The church has only one small parking lot behind Pilgrim House on Cleveland Street. Bowdoin College allows people to park in the blue decal parking lots, including the one on Cleaveland Street across from Pilgrim House and behind the sanctuary. Generally, on Sunday mornings, there is parking available all along Park Row, alongside Bowdoin College and the downtown green. There is also parking by the train station on Station Road. There are a few accessible parking spaces along Maine Street in front of the sanctuary. If you need additional assistance, pull up in front of the sanctuary, and a greeter will assist you.

Accessibility

In the sanctuary, two pews have been widened so that a wheelchair can fit in, and others may sit with you in the pew. Enter the vestry from Maine Street up the covered ramp for accessible access to our sanctuary.

Childcare

You are welcome to bring your children to worship with you. We are a community of all ages. Pilgrim House has nursery and preschool rooms (the two-story brick building diagonally behind the sanctuary on Cleveland Street). Our church school staff will take good care of your children.

Elementary-age children begin the morning in worship. After a children’s moment, they attend church school in Pilgrim House. Teachers and one of the ushers help them to make the transition. You are very welcome to go with them until you both feel comfortable. Please get in touch with Bridgette Hodgkins, Children & Youth Ministry Leader, at BHODGKINS@FIRSTPARISH.NET or (207)729-7331 if you have more questions.

Some of us worship in jeans, others in their “Sunday best,” but most fall somewhere in between. We welcome your personal style.

FAQs

Our weekly worship is at 10am and you can watch here.

Children begin the morning sitting with their families in worship. After the first few minutes of the service, they will be invited forward for a special children’s message and then they will head over to their Sunday school classroom. You can pick your children up in their classroom when the service has ended.

People of all backgrounds come to First Parish Church, those who grew up in different types of churches, or who grew up without religion being a big part of their lives. No matter what your background, we would love to welcome you to take the next step on your journey of faith with us.

As an Open and Affirming congregation, we enthusiastically welcome and celebrate the gifts of people of all genders and sexual orientations.

After attending First Parish for a little while, we invite those who are interested to become a member of our congregation by attending a brief informational gathering, and then being introduced along with a group of new members during worship. Membership means making a public commitment to be a part of the ministry and mission of First Parish Church. We also welcome anyone to attend and be involved without becoming a member. Membership is required to vote at a congregational meeting, and to serve in certain leadership roles such as the Church Council.

Yes, we celebrate communion on the first Sunday of each month. All people who desire to participate are welcome to partake!

No. When you visit First Parish, you will not be asked to stand up and speak during the service.

Information about parking is available here.
