Practicing our Faith
By:
"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
There is a reason I never became especially good at playing the violin. I took weekly lessons from a wonderful teacher. The big problem was my practice habits—or rather lack of practice habits.
I never wanted to practice my violin, and even though my parents were pretty dutiful about getting me to do it most nights, I would usually rush through, not particularly focused on what I was doing.
And so, by the time I actually attended the lessons, I had made very little progress. I was creeping along, little by little, mostly just with what I could pick up in that one hour each week.
Our spiritual lives can be like this too. If our whole spiritual life happens on Sunday, we will make some progress, we will learn some new practices, and shift some perspectives, but it is slow-going.
Deepening our faith requires regular practice. It takes little moments each day in reflection, meditation, or prayer. We will grow if we are disciplined about finding those moments in our day—first thing in the morning, or after the kids go to sleep, or even just when you are stopped at a red light—to take a deep breath, and another, and remember the presence of God around you. To check in with your heart, and your spirit, and listen for the quiet voice of God.
Prayer: God, keep me persistent in the practice of my faith. Tap me on the shoulder those days I forget. Grant me grace as I seek to grow. Amen.
